XC Teams Nearing District Meet
Cross Country Season Update The sport of Cross Country requires commitment, dedication, and hard work. It’s not for everyone, but those who do it find satisfaction in the work, and the results. “It is all about grit and determination,” said Krum Girls’ Head Coach, Cody Wilson. As the District Cross Country Meet nears, both the boys and girls teams have been doing well. According to Wilson, Johanna Drews and Cassie-Kay McQuinn are the top performers for the girls team. Johanna has had 3 top 20 finishes. Cassie-Kay has had a top 20 finish, as well. Other Varsity runners include: Rheagan Borchardt, Hannah Cade, Caroline Shipley, Tatiana Rivas and Cali Neumeyer. For the boys the top performers have been Jose Marcileno,Casey Sharp and Tony Lugo, who also has medaled in every meet. Bobcat Varsity runners include Lugo, and Marcileno, along with Casey Sharp, Dylan Vargas, Julio Reyes, Bryson Laird, and Mitchem Martin. The teams run a tough schedule to better prepare themselves for The District Meet on October 20th. “We go to a lot of big meets,” Coach Clay said. “Some of the races have 300+ runners. One JV race had over 500.” The boys usually run between 2-3 daily, which means they will get in between 8- 12 during the practice week. The girls run between 2 and 4 miles most days. They also work on sprints at the track at least once a week. “Cross Country isn’t fun but doing something that is hard gives you a feeling of achievement,” Head Boys Coach, Thomas Clay said. Since Cross Country workouts are hard, and often early in the morning or in the brutal heat of the afternoon, Coach Wilson is quick to give encouragement to the girls. “There are days where I am envious of my athletes and the work they put in,” Wilson said. “They work hard and when I see that hard work pay off, I let them know about it.” Cross Country is a very tough sport but with enough time and energy, it will be worth all the hard work.
