Thursday Night Lights
Life As a JV Football Player Every Friday night, the town of Krum, Texas gathers around to watch outstanding boys play the game of football. Everyone enjoys watching them represent our small town out on the field, but no one really gives recognition to the boys who help them perform at the highest level: the JV football players. The Krum JV football team is a group of talented freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. These boys are out on the field everyday, not only making themselves better, but contributing to help the varsity improve. Throughout practice, the boys run scout team, which is where they run the opposing teams plays to prepare the varsity for Friday night. JV players take a beating every practice, every day. “The varsity coaches watch the film of the opposing team for friday night and then write the plays down on paper,” Sophomore Anthony Salazar said. “Then the JV huddles up before every play and looks at the route they need to run and does it to the best of their ability.“ While the upperclassmen on JV run scout team against the varsity, the freshman have individual time to work on getting better as a team. They run defensive and offensive drills so they can help contribute to the rest of the JV team as much as they can. “We run Pursuit, which is a defensive drill, Oklahoma Drill, which is a tackling drill, Block Shed Drill, and Lane Recognition, where the offensive line and defensive line recognize which the lanes they run through,” Freshman Major Martin said.
JV practice against the varsity everyday from August 1st to the end of November. From quarterback to kicker, every player counts; every player is needed. “The JV team is a vital part of the success of the varsity football team,” Head Coach Gary Robinson said. “Playing JV football is not easy, but it is very necessary for the success of the entire program.”
