A Boy Scout does what needs to be done. They see a need, and they address it. They are trained to help. They are trained to lead. They are trained to react. So, when Bryce Segars noticed that there was limited amount of seating area outside for students to sit, he did what Boy Scouts do, and he took action. Segars decided he wanted to give back to his high school, and so he made benches that are placed outside of the auditorium and gymnasium. “As an Eagle Scout candidate, I had to choose a project that gives back to the community or a non-profit,” , he said. “As I talked with Mrs. Pieniazek about projects that might be done at KHS, I realized the necessity for additional seating outside the auditorium was very much needed as the auditorium is used throughout the year by various organizations.” The planning for this Boy Scout Eagle Project began in April with lots of meetings and hours of paperwork. The actual project took about nine hours over a period of two days. The benches and planters were built in place on the day of the project. The benches were purchased from BnB Stone in Sanger and were put together at the high school on the work day. They took individual stone pieces and dry fitted them together. The Scouts then took the planters apart layer by layer and reassembled them using liquid nails until the desired height was reached. Soil and plants were added the next day after the planters had dried. Friends, family members, people from his church, and some businesses from Krum and Denton helped raise the money for the project. Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 136 in Krum helped with putting together the benches and planters. “I enjoyed making them for people to use and wish for them to be used for years to come,” Segars said. Segars is a sophomore at Krum High School and the son of KHS teacher, Stacie Segars. He is currently working to become an Eagle Scout.
