Softball Season Starts Soon

Softball season has started, and Krum began with a new head coach. William Chaney was the assistant coach of the Ladycats before taking over the responsibility of being head coach.

While Chaney is new to being a head coach, but he is handling his responsibilities well.

“There isn’t much of a difference between head coach and assistant coach aside from having to deal with all of the administrative side of things,” Chaney said. “I did not have to make a schedule, secure umpires, etc. as an assistant.”

Many would think that being the head coach would bring a lot more stress, but Coach Chaney is doing a good job of keeping things stress-free.

“Any time a new coach takes over, changes to varying degrees will be made. Not because the old way was bad or unsuccessful, but because the new coach is familiar and comfortable with it,” Chaney said. “We still use some of the routines that Coach Lucas established during her time as the head coach that helped build this team into a winner. Yet, we execute some things differently because of the success I have experienced at other schools using those methods.”

The assistant coaches are also very important to the success of the program. “Assistant coaches are critical to the success of any sports program. The assistants have to be knowledgeable, flexible, and good instructors,” Chaney says.

There are six starters returning to the varsity team. There are also three new players to Krum; Senior Avery Williams, Junior Maddie Goin, and Sophomore Lindsay Beutnagel.

Last year the softball team made it to the Regional Semi-Finals and they hope to make it even further this season.

“The main goal of the Krum Softball team is to build young ladies who are strong in body, mind, and soul, Chaney said. “If we can accomplish this, then everything else will fall into place.”

Sophomore Lindsay Hill is excited to be part of that process.

“I think we could be very successful and go far as long as we execute the way that we have been taught,” Hill said.

The softball team’s first home game is on Wednesday March 8th against Burkburnett.
